Mazzer Mini Modification

I own a Mazzer Mini, which is a fabulous grinder in many ways. Read a review of it at coffeegeek.com

BUT (!) it is really annoying that the portafilter fork is mounted so low that a lot of grinds fly outside of the filter basket!

As I will show here, there is a way to fix this design flaw. The idea is to mount the portafilter fork approximately 18 mm higher than the original point to make it come nearer where the grinds come out.

Please note that it is on your own risk you do this modification.

The warranty will be voided, but it could also be dangerous to do it if you are not careful with the tools needed. It also involves opening the Mazzer, which could lead to an electrical shock if you forget to unplug it from the mains outlet.

But if you still decide to make the modification, here are the instructions:

1. First of all you should get a 3 mm thick aluminium plate from where you cut out a 45 x 40 mm rectangle (see left picture).

Also get two M5 screws (i.e. dia 5 mm) and two M5 nylon nuts.

Drill the 5 mm (or maybe 5.5 is better) holes and bevel the top two holes to make the M5 screws fit nicely.

2. Remove the bottom plate of the Mazzer and unmount the portafilter fork.

3. Use a rounded file on the portafilter fork to make room for the screws which are used to mount the plate on the Mazzer (see right picture).

4. Mount the plate on the portafilter fork as shown in the picture on the left.
5. Mount the plate (with the portafilter fork) on the Mazzer with the original screws and nuts.

6. Restore the bottom plate on the Mazzer. Make sure no electrical cables get jammed!

This is the result (see left picture). As you can see, the portafilter is now much closer to the doser, and there is still enough space for the doser lever to go clear from hitting the portafilter. After doing this modification there is much less chance of grinds flying outside the portafilter. I wonder why Mazzer didn't do this from the beginning! Maybe because any portafilter should be able to fit, but they don't differ that much, do they?
